Getting from CAD to GIS

Directions Magazine has an article that tackles, among other things, the "migration path to ever-increasing data management capabilities." From Autodesk's point of view. I found the categorization of CAD users particularly interesting:

Sponsored by ENTCHEV GIS Architects

Level 1 - AutoCAD only users who are capturing geometric CAD data but do not georeference the information. There are possibly tens of thousands of users at this level.
Level 2 - Users who have migrated CAD data to Map 3D to begin the process of integrating geospatial capabilities.
Level 3 - Users who are taking CAD and GIS data and classifying them with extensive feature attribution..."
Here is the full article.

Article does not speak to us little guys. It does not suggest technology to provide a user friendly interface to non-technicals (web portal). Its good to hear that Autodesk is trying to share a vision, but I am not getting a message I can convert into Purchase Order. Tom

The CAD/GIS integration issues are complex, as I am sure you and anyone who has ever tackled them will agree. They are also multi-level, and I agree with you that the article does not address all levels.

One reason this article caught my eye and I decided to post about it was that the Autodesk author comes out to say that there are possibly tens of thousands of CAD users who capture geographic data but do not georeference the information. This is, according to an Autodesk representative, a CAD/GIS Level 1 issue.

This is a familiar issue in some NJ locales. There are still groups where the CAD folks resist georeferencing their data, yet talk about CAD/GIS integration. Can't do it, and it is the CAD guy who says so, not us GIS geeks.

I have written elsewhere (http://www.directionsmag.com/article.php?article_id=2213) about some other issues surrounding the CAD/GIS integration, and the dearth of tools for the job.

I have found CAD and GIS are about as compatible as oil and water...many steps need to be taken to come close to the accuracy required to utilize a CAD file with a GIS project...such as parcel layer creation. I have found many topology type errors when trying to close a polygon...usually due to sloppy CAD work.
