Microsoft and ESRI, Sitting in a Tree…

Microsoft and ESRI issued a joint press release today (first noted by James Fee), announcing an ever-tighter collaboration between ArcGIS and Microsoft Virtual Earth.

Not to toot my own horn, but who wrote that “there [probably] is a Microsoft-ESRI merger or acquisition in the works” back in March?

The $200/year price listed on James Fee's blog is just for the use of VE as a base layer in ArcGIS. If you do work all over, it's probably worth the price. I've found that most of the counties I've done planning work in have their own set of aerial photography - some better than what's available now. I haven't panned around VE as much as Google, but I've found that the stitching of different datasets leaves something to be desired. There was one section of New Jersey that had photography from three different seasons, that makes for a very distracting base map.
