ArcGIS 9.4 – A Tired Road Ahead

Adena Schutzberg posted an excellent and very elaborate summary of two ESRI UC presentations I would have liked to attend – Clint Brown’s "A Framework for Implementing GIS on the Web," and Damien Spangrud’s “ArcGIS 9.4, the Road Ahead."

Sponsored by ENTCHEV GIS Architects

I am borderline depressed by “The Road Ahead.”  Not Damien’s or Adena’s fault, I’m sure, but I am getting a very “tired” vibe from the presentation summary.  There is no excitement.  It looks like there are no coming attractions to speak of, really.

There are exciting GIS concepts that haven't yet materialized. There's still hope! I just doubt that anything new or innovative will come from ESRI. They will definitely maintain their position as the "GIS leader", but when it comes to the public perception of GIS/online maps, they can't keep ahead of the curve.
