My Statement to the New Jersey Geospatial Forum (NJGF) Membership
As I wrote in an earlier post, I was nominated, and encouraged by friends and colleagues, to throw my hat in the ring in the 2008 NJGF Executive Committee Elections, for the position of a Private Sector Representative. So I have.
Voting opened today via the NJGF website, voting closes 11/21/2008. According to NJGF bylaws, “Voting privileges for Executive Committee elections are established by attendance at a minimum of 50% of New Jersey Geospatial Forum meetings held between elections. Voting privileges are also established by active participation on a Task Force during the time period between Executive Committee elections as certified by the Task Force Chair.”
Here is my statement to the NJGF membership:
A large majority of GIS technology users are employed in the public sector. Nevertheless, private GIS businesses have always been, and will continue to be, an integral part of the GIS ecosystem. A successful GIS implementation, public or private, inevitably hinges on a successful public/private partnership.
My current position as a New Jersey GIS business owner makes me sensitive to the issues that businesses face on a daily basis, as well as some strategic issues more relevant to private industry than to government. My education as a planner helped me see and understand things from a public policy perspective.
I will bring my knowledge and experience to the NJGF Executive Committee to represent the interests of the private business GIS community, as well as to foster and grow the mutual understanding necessary for a continuing successful public/private GIS partnership in New Jersey.
