Murder: New York City
The New York Times released a very impressive interactive online map of homicides in New York City. Clear, simple, fast, intuitive, impactful. Powered by Google.
Archie Belaney, a commenter on The All Points Blog, nominates Eric Schmidt, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Marissa Mayer as the most influential people in GIS. (S)he has a point.

I don't really think the professionals consider Google Earth/Maps real GIS tools.
I agree that many GIS professionals do not consider Google Earth/Maps real GIS tools. But Google has done more than anyone to further the understanding and acceptance of GIS and bring it into the mainstream. This is pretty influential.
Agreed they have helped get GIS noticed, but I'd say the people behind OSM or telascience, particularly Norman Vine are more influential in real GIS, but that's just my opinion.
