I am confused – is VGI a good thing or not?

I am talking about Volunteered Geographic Information. At the end of 2007 it was bad. It was the purview of unreliable mashups, the background against which the publishers of professional authoritative content stood out.

Today it is good. According to the same source. What happened? Did volunteers become more reliable over the last two years, or did something else change?
