Experimenting with advertising -- feedback requested

Many blogs run ads nowadays. I have given the issue some serious consideration, and I ask my readers for input and feedback in making a decision.

Instead of running ads served by Google or some other such service, we are considering offering limited ad space to a limited number of carefully selected and hand-picked reputable and respectable geospatial businesses, like so:

Sponsored by ENTCHEV GIS Architects

The idea is to connect these businesses with this blog’s readers, while generating some revenue for the blog and its contributors at the same time.

What do you say?

Hi, I read your blog through a blog reader (Snarfer) so I very rarely actually see the blog page and therefore wouldn't really see ads that are posted.

Thank you. I know that a lot of people do that (including myself (Google Reader)). So, I take this to mean that you wouldn't mind the ads, correct?

If you're going to hand pick the ads, I suggest you follow the model The Deck uses:

One ad per page, often in the secondary column. Don't insert the ads into the blog posts, "feature" them off to the side.

Thank you. Great idea. Kottke uses The Deck (or does The Deck use Kottke?).
