    I think interns work well, provided they're well trained. Just like with new employees, if you haven't provided training and supervision, they're not going to produce the quality work you desire. I think there's a strong desire to forgo true training, because interns are usually short term employees.

      And therein lies the rub. GPS data collection is not a trivial task, and the accuracy and reliability of its output is crucial for the proper functioning of other systems. But all too often the temptation is there to do the job on the cheap.

    Training needs to be ongoing & supervision needs to be very tight, otherwise you'll end up with a big mess. It also doesn't hurt to make sure that the students you hire as your interns have at least a bit of GIS, Surveying or Engineering background.
