AutoCAD coming back to Mac, can ArcGIS be far behind?

I have written about GIS for Mac before. I have written about how the search string “GIS for Mac” draws a constant stream of traffic to my blog. Commenters have shared their experiences and workarounds for making ArcGIS work on a Mac. One would think ESRI would listen. Maybe they do.

Or maybe they only look at what Autodesk does.

When Autodesk discontinued AutoCAD for Mac, ESRI was quick to follow suite by dropping ArcView for Mac. With AutoCAD now (allegedly) returning to Mac, will ESRI follow suite again by porting ArcGIS to the Mac? This would make many of my friends happy. And who knows, maybe I’ll become a Mac convert myself.

I really like my MacBook Pro (writing from one), but would rather see software developers enhance/fix bugs than port the software to the Mac. Thanks to Parallels and VM Ware it's easy to just fire up a virtual machine whenever I need to access Windows software. We really need GIS software to capitalize on 64-bit operating systems and multi-core architecture. Having the software on a Mac, while nifty, won't advance our ability to analyze massive amounts of data if it does not offer advanced processing capabilities.

Unless the advent and adoption of the cloud and the growing *cultural* domination of the Mac bring about a complete realignment of the computing landscape. E.g., all heavy lifting happens in the cloud, all interfacing happens through a Mac appliance.

Why not use GIS software such as QGIS that has no need to be specially ported to the Mac - because it is cross-platform to start with?
