GPS interference and potential for loss of service
I got an email with this subject by way of a New Jersey Geospatial Forum (NJGF) email list I subscribe to. (N.B.: Email -- still the killer app).
The problem:
"Apparently a company called LightSquared has applied to the FCC to be able to expand their service offerings in the band adjacent to the radio frequency band where the GPS L1 signal operates. They are looking to operate a primary terrestrial wireless service and deploy a network of densely populated transmitters that would cover whole urban areas.
A GPS World article sheds more light on the issue. What does this mean? If not properly tested/vetted this has the potential to seriously affect the integrity of GPS across the country (i.e. loss of GPS service). This could affect everything from high end survey grade GPS devices to hand held GPS/GIS data collection devices to in-car navigation."
