Map of operational New Jersey gas stations after hurricane Sandy -- November 1, 2012
[UPDATE Monday, November 5, 2012, 5:25 PM] We keep adding open gas station locations as they are being submitted to us (except when we sleep (we do sleep)). The map is maintained continuously otherwise.
[UPDATE Sunday, November 4, 2012, 11:27 AM] I am updating the map with user-submitted information. Green markers are user-submitted operational locations. I am removing red markers for gas stations that are reported to be closed. Send your feedback to info@entchev.com. More info below the map. Data source is here (Google Fusion Table).

[UPDATE Saturday, November 3, 2012, 2:02 PM] I created a few more GIS data layers from the NJOEM lists, in addition to the gas stations -- open hotels, pharmacies, and fast food places. Instead of just publishing the maps on my blog, I decided to contribute the layers to the official Google Crisis Map. I intend to continue to work with Google and NJOEM to keep the data up-to-date.

[UPDATE Friday, November 2, 2012, 11:14 AM] The interest in this map has been overwhelming. Thank you all for the kind words and feedback.
I know that the map is not perfect, and have been thinking of ways to keep it current. It's not that simple. I have decided to keep the map as is, with map data sourced exclusively from the NJ Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM). The NJOEM is updating their database constantly from information sent to them by email. I encourage you to send your updates to the NJOEM; I will update this map when the NJOEM publishes an updated list.

I don't know who put these placemarkers on this map but some of them are completely off.

I put these markers on the map, based on data from the NJ Office of Emergency Management. I understand the data is not perfect. What do you mean "some of them are completely off"? That there is no gas station at that location, or that the gas station is not open?

The 2 in jersey city by the holland tunnel (235 12th street & 590 munoz marin blvd) are not open to my knowledge... I live on 9th street and drove by that area of stations this morning (6:30am) in need of gas to find them all in the dark.
Perhaps these are stations I didn't notice but I wouldn't bank on them as your fuel source.

Thank you. I am trying to come up with a workable system for updating the map. This is very dynamic data -- things change every minute. What we are looking at here is a snapshot of the situation at 4:45 pm yesterday, as the NJ OEM understood it to be.

The map needs to be updated much more frequently. There are gas stations in Passaic County that opened last night and later closed down when they ran out of gas. There were stations open on Route 46 in Little Falls today. There are stations that will be open tomorrow in Woodland Park.

I agree. The question is how do we collect updated data. This is no small problem. User feedback can be mapped, but will it need to be verified? How?
Hopefully an updated database from the NJOEM will address these issues.

Please note the Gas station on Market Street in Saddle Brook is NOT open.

I noticed that you only have one open gas station in the Freehold/Jackson/Howell area. That isn't accurate.

Thank you! I have sent all feedback to the NJ OEM. As soon as they publish an updated list, I will update the map.

Thank you for the map! Just FYI, Wawa's don't seem to be on the list. They are open except for the stores listed here: http://www.wawa.com/WawaWeb/cms_docs/StoreClosings_1000am_110212.pdf

Thank you! I will forward this to the NJOEM.

where are the names of the stations?

I am using data provided by the NJOEM. If they don't give me names, I don't have them. I suggest you address your inquiry to NJOEM by email at ohsp.psdsk@ohsp.state.nj.us. When they publish an updated list, I will update the map -- with whatever information they provide.

Thank you. I have sent the info over to the NJOEM.

this is not helpful at all without names

If you click on the red dot on the map, a box pops up with the address. That is all you need; if you drive to the address, there is clearly a gas station there. I've done that, but found no gas when I got there (see my post above.)

You say "operational" gas stations. They may be open- I just posted the comment about 560 Broad St.being out of gas; the station is open, therefore "operational" (?) but they have no gas. I spent a lot of time yesterday looking for a station with gas; at this point, it takes too much gas to look for gas. The data must be VERY accurate for it to be worth driving out there.

I agree. I cannot guarantee the map accuracy -- I only mapped data already published by the NJOEM, duly time-stamped.

Does anyone know where the need for gas stations stops - I live in Blackwood and we are having no problem with lines at the gas stations or availabilty --- We have a alot of WAWA gas stations that are not on the map --- So I guess does anyone know the cut off of crowded vs. non crowded gas stations
Reply to this
I do not. The absence of Wawa gas stations on this map was pointed out earlier, I have forwarded the message to the NJOEM.

Obviously Liked the website and also sent a link to this website to all I know who could use it.
Quick Question/s:
1-) Can someone with Positive Assurance give me an address for Gas stations in North Bergen and Union City Area
and
2-) How true is this ??? - One is not allowed to take his/her CAR to the gas station - they would fill / give you gas only in a Canister ( 3 gallons ; Color : RED) ??? heard a family friend say that the Authorities won't let us take the Car to the Gas station - Is this really true ???
huh ???

Thanks again guys / gals

Thank you! I don't have an answer to question #1, but maybe some of the readers may. Regarding question #2, I guess it depends where you are. I drove around a lot yesterday and I saw both -- stations with huge lines of cars, and others with entrances blocked by police, allowing only people with canisters. I only saw red canisters.

So whatever is in red, has gas and is open right now?

Yes, according to the NJOEM, as of 4:45 PM on November 1, 2012.

This map is great!! Thanks so much for creating it. NJOEM list is hard to find, hard to read. The Gulf station on Main St. in Woodbridge across from Community Center has had long lines, but gasoline every day.

Stupid site, not up tp date, no phone numbers to call to see if station is open! To little to late!

I did the best I could by mapping the data others provided. I wanted to deliver the NJOEM data in an easier-to-read format. Thousands were happy with the map. Sorry I didn't meet your expectations. No good deed goes, unpunished, I guess...

Thank you for being part of the solution, there are ungrateful jerks everywhere, treat them like the bad bag of wind that they are. Everyone is under so much stress. I question why there are gas lines this year but not last year when everyone was under water?

Thank you, Arlene!
Not sure about the gas lines. My non-expert opinion is that they are the result of mass psychosis, not actual shortages.
